Program Focus: Anti-Bullying

An anti-bullying program was implemented in the West Harvey/Dixmoor School District 147. The program utilizes the Links, Incorporated’s “Trash Talking: It’s No Joke!” anti-bullying initiative as a resource. Through hands-on experiences, positive group interaction and role playing, students receive the proper skills needed to recognize and address bullying in all of its forms and in all places. They are educated as to its long-term effects and the possible consequences of bullying, as well as how to distinguish between bullying and teasing. The program educates and empowers the students to make appropriate choices regarding their own behavior and in response to the behavior of others; and, exposes them, through a variety of enrichment activities, to environments and events beyond the boundaries of their classroom, school and neighborhood. Weekly classroom instruction, special presentations, field trips, journaling and incentives are major components of the program. As a result of the efforts and investment of SSCC, the data reflects a significant decrease in the number of discipline referrals for the children involved in the program.
